The AFC South is most likely the worst division in football. You have the heavily favored Houston Texans who some think could be a Super Bowl contender and the Tennessee Titans who might be competitive. Both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Indianapolis Colts are expected to struggle this year.

The Houston Texans made the playoffs for the first time in team history last season and won a playoff game in spite of the fact that QB Matt Schaub missed the last month and a half of the season, and both RB Arian Foster and WR Andre Johnson missed basically half of the season each. The defense will be hurt by the loss of LB/DE Mario Williams, but he was out for the last three months of the season as well last year. The offense should be back and healthy in the end, though the team is going to be searching for one of its rookie receivers, Dwight Jones, Keshawn Martin, or DeVier Posey to flank Johnson.

Houston -185
Tennessee +475
Jacksonville +2500
Indianapolis Colts +300

The AFC North could be a very competitive division this year. Oddsmakers have the Ravens as overall favorites but the Pittsburgh Steelers are right behind them and look out for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Bookmaker Sportsbook is paying attention to the Cincinnati Bengals by making them the +385 third choices on the board in the AFC North. The Bengals really came out of nowhere last year from where we were sitting to make it to the postseason with basically an entirely new roster. QB Andy Dalton was never all that special, but he was a good game manager, a la Flacco in Baltimore, and second year OC Jay Gruden is quickly becoming one of the most coveted young coaches in the league. Cincy plays good defense, but there is definitely a void of stars to watch out for.

AFC North Odds

Baltimore Ravens +133
Pittsburgh Steelers +137
Cincinnati Bengals +385
Cleveland Browns +3300

The heavy betting favorite is still the New England Patriots, who are -390 to win the AFC East and +300 to not win the division. QB Tom Brady had his team in the Super Bowl last year, (a Giants win) and with TE Rob Gronkowski and TE Aaron Hernandez leading the way for the machine-like passing attack, it really feels like it is only a matter of time until more of the all-time passing records fall by the wayside. Defense remains the big question. The Patriots addressed a lot of this in the draft and free agency but the biggest advantage they have in the East is there might not be a team out there that has a shot of competing with the Pats in the AFC East in 2012.

New England Patriots -390
New York Jets +685
Buffalo Bills +1025
Miami Dolphins +1500

We are still a few months away from really thinking about NFL betting action, but the Super Bowl odds are always out at 5Dimes Sportsbook, and we are going to be taking a quick look at some of the teams that have been movers and shakers since the end of last season on the 2013 Super Bowl odds.

We’ll start with one of the teams that has seen a lot of action on it over the course of the last several weeks, the Philadelphia Eagles (+1100). The Eagles really had a strong NFL Draft and the offseason, and they look to have done quite a bit to sure up their defense. The Achilles heel was right up the middle, and those problems might have been solved in the NFL Draft by taking DT Fletcher Cox in the first round and LB Mychal Kendricks in the second. The team also added LB DeMeco Ryans from the Houston Texans in a trade in the offseason, and then drafted DE Vinny Curry to add yet another pass rusher to a team that already has a slew of great rush ends and linebackers. If QB Michael Vick can take care of the football, this is a team that will do a heck of a lot better than its 8-8 campaign last year.

There also seems to be some budding enthusiasm about the San Francisco 49ers (+1200). The Niners were just a few plays away from the Super Bowl last year, and they could be back for more in 2012. QB Alex Smith clearly has control of the team, and the rest of the NFC West really doesn’t look like it did all that much to improve its positioning. WRs Randy Moss and Mario Manningham were both great signings for a team that didn’t have all that much in the way of wide receivers, and San Fran also added first round pick WR AJ Jenkins as well. Keep an eye on RB LaMichael James, who becomes a great change of pace back as well to RBs Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, and Brandon Jacobs.

As far as teams that are going in the wrong direction, we have to talk about the St. Louis Rams (+9000). No one really expected to see the Rams do all that much this year anyway, but a perceived relatively weak NFL Draft didn’t help either. St. Louis hitched itself to QB Sam Bradford by passing on QB Robert Griffin III, and it traded down quite a bit as well to get a lot of picks. DT Michael Brockers still felt like a bit of a reach for the Rams where they ended up at No. 14, and with their three second round picks, they got a lot of speedy players in WR Brian Quick, DB Janoris Jenkins, and RB Isaiah Pead, but none of the three really strike us as tremendous starters that are going to help this team immediately.

The perception of the Cleveland Browns (+22500) is definitely going in the wrong direction as well. The Browns have already essentially named their first round NFL Draft pick, QB Brandon Weeden as the starter even though he is younger than QB Colt McCoy, who has been in this league now for two years. RB Trent Richardson will be explosive for sure, but is he really capable of getting around the defenses for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens? It just doesn’t seem like it. Losing out on RB Peyton Hillis in the offseason really didn’t help matters either, and we can definitely see why the Browns are going to be so bad once again in 2012.

Notable Super Bowl 47 Betting Line Changes

The 2012 NFL Draft is in the books, and now that bettors and the sportsbooks alike have had a chance to digest what went on over the course of the weekend, there have been some adjustments that have been made. Check out some of the teams that we think did a great job in the NFL Draft that should be counted upon at these odds as Super Bowl contenders this year.

New England Patriots (+600 @ Bookmaker Sportsbook) – The Pats did the very unusual thing of trading up, and they did it twice in the first round of the draft. They took three players that could be starting right away in their first three picks, taking Chandler Jones, Dont’a Hightower, and Tavon Wilson, and in the end, if they end up all being impact players, when combined with Jerod Mayo, the makings are there for a young defense that could be ready to pick up the slack from the offense. The first six picks for this team were all spent on defense, and New England could be set to finally give QB Tom Brady the help that he needs to get the job done.

Pittsburgh Steelers (+1800 @ Bookmaker Sportsbook) – Getting OLs David DeCastro and Mike Adams in the first two rounds of the draft without having to trade up all of a sudden makes this offensive line quite formidable. Remember that the 49ers did this last year with Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati, and they led the team all the way to the NFC Championship Game with a sturdy O-Line. Now, DeCastro and Adams will join Maurkice Pouncey up front, and this all of a sudden looks like one of the potentially best offensive lines in the league. Sure, the defense is aging just a bit, but with this infusion of talent in crucial spots for this team, there is no doubt now that the Steelers are going to be back and contending once again this year.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+10000 @ Bookmaker Sportsbook) – Betting on the Bucs right now isn’t just about playing on them. It’s about playing against the Falcons and the Saints as well. It is clear that New Orleans is going to have a heck of a lot of rebuilding to do to the point that it might seriously not make the playoffs next year. The Falcons had already given up their top pick in the draft for this year as well. Sure, Carolina is going to be headed in the right direction as well, but we think that Tampa Bay has done the most to improve its team. The Bucs picked up Eric Wright defensively and Carl Nicks and Vincent Jackson offensively. They passed on Mo Claiborne and elected to trade down, pick up some picks, and take S Mark Barron instead. He’ll immediately be a starting safety for the team, and we think that the second pick in the first round that they had, RB Doug Martin is the perfect type of runner for new Head Coach Greg Schiano. The scouts are already ranting and raving about LB Lavonte Davis and his ability to take over right away at outside linebacker. Look out for a big rebound for the Buccaneers this year.

NFL Draft Props

The 2012 NFL Draft starts tonight, and as always, there are plenty of NFL Draft props that are available on the board for you to bet on. Check out some of these great props, available to you at 5Dimes Sportsbook!

Quarterbacks Taken in 1st Round Over/Under 3.5

We already know that the first two picks in the NFL Draft are going to be quarterbacks when the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins take Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III respectively, and we also know that Ryan Tannehill is going to get picked in the first round at some point as well, whether it be by the Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, or another team down the line. The point of concern here really is whether Brandon Weeden ends up being drafted in the first round or not. Thanks to his age though, we just don’t know if a team I going to be willing to take Weeden with their first pick in the NFL Draft, and we still aren’t all that sure that if Miami passes on Tannehill, that he slips to the back end of the first round as well.

Running Backs Taken in 1st Round Over/Under 1.5

Short of Trent Richardson, it is hard to put a finger on any specific player being the second running back taken on Thursday night. That being said, we do think that there will be another player that gets picked at some point at the tailback position, quite possible Boise State’s Doug Martin right at the back end of the first round.

Kendall Wright Draft Position Over/Under 23.5

The question here at hand is whether the Houston Texans are going to trade out of the No. 26 spot to move up to get Wright. Obviously, if he is on the board when it is time for the Texans to pick, this is where Wright is going to get drafted, but in the end, it becomes a bit of a question as to whether or not someone else decides to take him. San Diego is a big possibility, and the Chargers taking him would be a winner for the under. At +220 odds, we think that there is a great chance that Wright gets drafted before the 24th pick in the draft.

Matt Kalil is or is not 3rd Overall Pick

All of a sudden, the information has come out that the Minnesota Vikings are interested in Morris Claiborne with the third overall pick in the draft. We just don’t buy it. The only way that we see Kalil not going No. 3 to the Vikes is the team ends up trading the pick to, say the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the Miami Dolphins. Minnesota has been doing a lot of posturing about this pick, but we think in the end, that it is just that: posturing. Around 8:30 ET or so, when the Commissioner comes to the podium, he is going to announce that with the third overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings are going to take Matt Kalil, tackle, USC.

2012 NFL Week 1 Point Spreads

The 2012 NFL season might seem like it is still quite a way’s in the future, but here at Cappers Mall, it is never too early to get in on all of the NFL betting action.

The oddsmakers are already planning on the Washington Redskins and the Indianapolis Colts using their respective rookie quarterbacks, knowing that both are nine-point underdogs in their first game of the season. Interestingly enough, the only other teams that are even potentially going to be using a rookie quarterback right out of the chute, the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins (with Ryan Tannehill) are both six-point underdogs against teams that played quite well down the stretch last season, the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans respectively.

But of course, there are a number of key games that are on the docket that cannot be missed. The action all starts off on Wednesday, September 5th, when the New York Giants raise their Super Bowl banner on the night they take on the Dallas Cowboys. The G-Men are laying 3.5, showing a lot of confidence that perhaps Dallas can come on the road and upset the defending champs.

Sunday’s showcase game in the afternoon pits the team that hosted the NFC Championship Game last year, the San Francisco 49ers, on the road against the team that was the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs, the Green Bay Packers. Both teams are expected to be Super Bowl contenders again this year, and that should make for a great game. Green Bay is favored by 5.5 points.

Sunday Night Football should be a doozy, as the much anticipated debut of QB Peyton Manning will have arrived. Peyton and his new team from Denver will be taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers, who still have to be fuming over losing in the first round of the playoffs right here in this stadium last year. The oddsmakers are showing confidence in the Broncos with Manning calling the shots, as they are 1.5-point favorites against the perennial Super Bowl contenders.

There are two games to wrap up Week 1 on the NFL betting lines, as the Cincinnati Bengals are getting 6.5 on the road against the Baltimore Ravens, while the San Diego Chargers are slender 1.5-point favorites on the road against the Oakland Raiders in a rematch of the final game of the regular season from last year.

The NFL released their 2012 NFL schedule today. The Cowboys and Giants will open the NFL season in New York on Wednesday, September 5th on NBC. The game was originally going to be played on November 6th but was moved back a day so not to interfere with the Barack Obama speech at the Democratic National Convention.

Some of the other NFL week one games is intriguing. Andrew Luck will most likely make his debut and on the road in Chicago. The New Orleans Saints will play this game with an Interim coach who will be subbing in for the interim coach as Sean Payton is suspended for the year and the first interim coach Joe Vitt will be suspended for the first six regular season games.

Peyton Manning, if healthy will play his first game with the Denver Broncos in Primetime on Sunday Night Football against James Harrison and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

We will get two openers on Monday Night Football, one on the East and one on the West. The Bengals will visit the Ravens and the Chargers will open in Oakland.
